There are tons of camping blankets on the market, and it can be hard to sort through which ones will actually meet your preferences and needs. Do you want an extra blanket to enhance your camping experience? Or is this blanket meant to replace your sleeping bag? The right blanket can help keep you warm in varied temperatures and become an essential on your packing list.

Materials Matter

The top thing you want to consider when purchasing a blanket—aside from cost, of course—is its material. The type (or types) of fabric affects the warmth, weight and packability of the blanket. Here are the most common materials you’ll want to consider:

This synthetic fabric, which is typically made of polyester, is usually cheaper than down but won’t be as warm. Depending on the average temperatures where you live or will be exploring, a fleece blanket is well-suited for summer and fall camping. If you’re front country camping or hanging out around the fire, heavier blankets with fleece will work.

Known as nature’s best insulator, this material sourced from goose and duck is used inside many blankets. The higher the fill power, the more warmth per ounce that down provides. Generally, look for at least 600-fill power. This means the blanket should be warm, while still staying lightweight and packable. If you’re backcountry camping, down blankets will be the best choice so you’re not bogged down by a heavy, bulky blanket.

How We Selected

Over the past few years, I’ve been reviewing outdoor and camping gear for publications such as Backpacker and Men’s Journal. As a newbie turned enthusiast, I’ve had the opportunity to test or personally purchase some of the blankets listed below. I also researched a variety of customer reviews on Amazon and various forums to get a better understanding of what’s working for other avid campers. When reviewing these blankets, I considered cost, material, size, and others features such as water-resistance. No matter how you like to camp or where you’re headed, there’s a blanket here for you.

Kelty Bestie Blanket

Key Specs:
Dimensions: 75.6 x 42.1 in.
Weight: 1 lb 8 oz
Material: Polyester

This blanket is great for staying cozy around the fire. Although Kelty recommends it as a throw for under or over your sleeping bag overnight, make sure you keep it dry because it isn’t water-resistant and could eventually soak up water. It’s surprisingly warm for how lightweight it is on account of the Cloudloft synthetic insulation.

  • Affordable
  • Comes with a bag to carry it

  • Not waterproof

Plus, you don’t need an extra bag to pack it up—it compresses into a built-in pocket.

REI Co-op Camp Blanket
REI Co-op

Key Specs:
• Dimensions:
70 x 54 in.
Weight: 1 lb 6 oz
Material: Pertex nylon

This DWR-finished blanket easily sheds water, stains, pet hair, and more. The quilting helps keep all of the cozy polyester insulation in place, but be careful when washing it so you don’t jostle the insulation out of place and cause cold spots. It’s also a little bulky and packs up to be about the size of a sleeping bag.

  • Machine washable
  • Great warmth-to-weight ratio

  • Takes up a decent amount of space

Horizon Hound Camping Blanket
Horizon Hound

Key Specs:
• Dimensions:
77 x 50 in.
Weight: 1 lb 1 oz
Material: Nylon and down

This puffy blanket is packed with 650-fill down, making it plenty warm for its weight. The outer shell is water-resistant, so it’s a great option to use as a barrier between your sleeping bag and the ground. Be careful when washing it, though—it can cause the down to move around, reducing its insulating ability.
