The Best Track Saws for Any Woodworking Project

A track saw is a handy tool for carpenters or anyone who does a lot of woodworking projects. It combines the convenience and portability of a circular saw with some of the best features and popular capabilities of a table saw.

Track saws, also sometimes called plunge saws, are often sold as a kit that includes the saw, tracks, and one or more accessories. For cordless models, that means a battery and charger, too. Technically, tracks are optional because you can use these saws without them, but it’s much more efficient—and safer—to use the saw with a track as intended. Buying a kit is often cheaper than investing in parts individually and makes it that much more convenient to start ripping.

Specs to Consider

Finding the right track saw comes down to blade size, power, and speed. Most track saw blades measure 6.5 inches in diameter, but larger and smaller options are also available. The larger the blade, the thicker the wood you can cut.

Like most power tools these days, track saws are available in corded and cordless models. The pros and cons are pretty much the same as other tools, too. Corded models can be less convenient (especially if an electrical outlet isn’t in close proximity), but cordless models can lack some of the power of their corded alternatives and have a limited battery life. And if you don’t have a spare battery, you might find yourself stuck mid-project.

Corded track saws are more common at this point, as evidenced by the fact that most of our picks fall into this category. Right now, most cordless models are produced by a small group of manufacturers, but I suspect, as with other types of power tools, the cordless options will continue to grow in popularity as the capabilities and options improve.

Regardless of power source, the best track saws offer variable speeds, which commonly range from 2,000 to 5,500 rpm. As a general rule, use lower speeds when cutting hardwoods, and reserve higher rpm for getting the cleanest cut on softer woods. Keep in mind using higher speeds than necessary increases the wear and tear on your tools. Plus, it’s easier to control a saw at lower speeds, which means you’re more likely to achieve a precise, smooth cut.

How We Evaluated

As the former owner of a construction and property maintenance business and a passionate DIYer, I’ve used a variety of saws, including track saws, which I especially like for cabinet, door, and shelving projects. I drew on these experiences when evaluating models and compared the power source, blade size, speed range, and features of each saw. After consulting reviews from hundreds of Amazon customers and referring to manufacturer information for product specifications, I recommend these seven track saws.
