Best Overall: Makita XAG11T 18V LXT BL 4-1/2”/5

Weight: 6.2 lb with 5.0-Ah battery

Wheel Size: 4.5 inches

Likes: Powerful and smooth. Its brake stops the wheel in seconds, and its feedback-control circuit prevents kickback from a stalled or pinched wheel. It also has an easy-adjusting wheel guard: Flip the lever up to unlock, pivot the guard, and lock the lever down.

Dislikes: None.

Easy To Use: DeWalt DCG413B 20V XR Brushless 4.5
$177.95 (19% off)

Weight: 5.8 lb with 6.0-Ah battery

Wheel Size: 4.5 inches

Likes: This potent grinding machine has the easiest-to-position wheel guard: Just push in a small lever and pivot the guard. We also like the tool’s unique spindle nut, which can be loosened or tightened with one Allen wrench.

Dislikes: Vibration is not bad, but it is noticeable.

Effortlessly Good: Milwaukee 2783-22 M18 Fuel 4-1/2

Weight: 6.2 lb with 5.0-Ah battery

Wheel Size: 4.5 inches

Likes: A great tool that effortlessly shaves down metal. Our favorite aspect is the ingeniously designed spindle nut, which requires no tools to loosen or tighten. Just flip up a small lever and spin it by hand.

Dislikes: If you pivot the wheel guard too far around the wheel, it pops off, and you have to reassemble the guard.

Goes Into Tight Spaces: WPB 18 LTX BL 115 (613074860) 4 1/2

Weight: 6.2 lb with 5.5-Ah battery

Wheel Size: 4.5 inches

Likes: The slimmest grinder tested, this is the only tool with a body that rotates 270 degrees relative to the battery, improving access in those grinding positions in which the battery would be in the way.

Dislikes: Its battery is difficult to slide on and off.

Perfectly Solid: Hilti 22-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless 5 in. Angle Grinder AG 500 Tool Body
Home Depot

Weight: 6.4 lb with 5.2-Ah battery

Wheel Size: 5 inches

Likes: A solid, industrial-duty grinder. Its Active Torque Control feature separates the 9,500-rpm motor from the drivetrain if you push hard enough to stall the wheel or if you pinch it. We like its large and comfortable paddle switch.

Dislikes: The battery makes a firm, dust-excluding fit to the handle, which means you’ll need several days of use before the battery slides on and off easily.

Runs Smoothly: Bosch GWS18V-45PSC

Weight: 6.4 lb with 6.3-Ah battery

Wheel Size: 4.5 inches

Likes: Runs so smoothly and without vibration that you feel like you’re evaporating metal, not grinding it. This was the only grinder to have a helpful automatic work light, and its LED panel helps you set motor speed and monitor battery life.

Dislikes: No wheel brake. The tool-free wheel guard is hard to pivot.
